To check your kidney function, doctors may recommend:

  • Blood test – Measures creatinine and calculates eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)
  • Urine test – Checks for protein (a sign of kidney damage)
  • Imaging – Ultrasound or CT scans to look for structural issues
  • Biopsy – In rare cases, a small sample of kidney tissue may be examined

With early diagnosis and proper management, many people with kidney disease live long, fulfilling lives. Management includes:

  • Following a kidney-friendly diet
  • Taking prescribed medications
  • Monitoring blood pressure and sugar
  • Seeing a nephrologist regularly
  • Preparing for dialysis or transplant if needed
